Our picks for June’s must-see movies
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (pictured above)
June 30
On March 2nd a massive story broke about the third Twilight movie, Eclipse. The studio had replaced editor Art Jones with Nancy Richardson, who edited the first Twilight movie!
When something as inside-industry as an editor getting the heave-ho makes the mainstream press, you know it’s a big flick. On Entertainment Weekly’s website the story garnered almost 200 comments ranging from, “Hopefully [Richardson] doesn’t bring back some of her ridiculous close ups,” to “Editing can really make or break a movie.”
Richardson’s dices and splices will be in the service of a story that finds Seattle (really Vancouver) menaced by a series of mysterious murders. Could they have something to do with that mean lady vampire (Bryce Dallas Howard) with a hate-on for Bella (Kristen Stewart), or has some psycho just gotten really tired of the rain?
In nearby Forks, things are getting serious between Bella and Edward (Robert Pattinson), but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to turn her back on wolf-pal Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).
Can’t wait to see how they edit that scene were Edward asks Bella to you know what...
Get Him to the Greek
In 2008’s gentle enough rom-com
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, rock star Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) was memorable for injecting spurts of insanity into the relatively sane lives of those around him. Now Snow — with his tight trousers and substance-abuse issues — is at the centre of his own spinoff. He’s joined by Jonah Hill who plays an up-tight record-company intern ordered to get the hedonistic rocker from the U.K. to L.A. for a gig.

Killers
At a romantic hotel along the French Riviera, Spencer (Ashton Kutcher), an adorable secret agent/hitman, meets Jen (Katherine Heigl), an adorable woman who is not a hitman, and they marry. She knows nothing of his profession...until three years later when their neighbour (Rob Riggle), who also turns out to be a hitman, is ordered to kill Spencer. Sort of like
Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but with only half the couple in on the joke.

The A-Team
Never frame an elite group of Special Forces soldiers for a crime
they did not commit. You know they’re just going to break out of jail
and become vigilante do-gooders until the day they can take their
revenge on you. Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley and brawny
mixed martial artist/UFC light heavyweight Quinton “Rampage” Jackson
adapt the 1980s TV show. Guess which one plays the role made famous by
Mr. T. Release date: June 11
The Karate Kid
Twelve-year-old
Detroit native Dre (Jaden Smith, spawn of Will) moves to China with his
mom (Taraji P. Henson) and runs afoul of a local bully. So he turns to
maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) to teach him the secrets of
(despite the title) kung fu. While we’re dubious this remake can live
up to the standards set by the 1984 original, we admit that when
choosing a kung fu master we may opt for Jackie “I Do All My Own
Stunts” Chan over Pat “Arnold” Morita. Release date: June 11

Toy Story 3
There are lots of reasons to be intrigued by Pixar’s third installment of the
Toy Story franchise. Not the least of which is that it’s a Pixar movie, and we can’t think of a single dud the animation giant has released. But the thing that really piques our interest is that the script was written by
Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt. In Arndt’s tale, Andy is all grown up and moving away to college. He won’t need Buzz (Tim Allen) or Woody (Tom Hanks) or any toys there, so the lot of them are donated to a day care centre teeming with sticky, snotty tots. Uh-oh.

Grown Ups
Four
Saturday Night Live alumni — Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider — plus Kevin James join forces for this story of five grade-school buddies who reunite after their old basketball coach dies. They travel to the cottage where they celebrated a big win back in the day and uncover the ways they have — and haven’t — changed over the decades.

Jonah Hex
What an odd cast. Megan Fox. John Malkovich. Josh Brolin. Michael Shannon. Will Arnett. Highbrow, lowbrow, beautifully plucked brows all come together to tell the equally odd story of an Old West bounty hunter (Brolin) with ties to the underworld (not the mob but the actual underworld, the result of a near-death experience). Malkovich plays an Old West terrorist, yes terrorist, preparing to raise an army of the dead.

Knight and Day
The second movie this month (see Killers) to feature a secret agent (Tom Cruise) who falls for a lovelorn layperson (Cameron Diaz) and pulls her into his world of danger and intrigue. This one sounds like it’s got more of a Mission: Impossible flavour, though. Not just because it stars Cruise, but because his assignment is to protect a super-battery that can produce an infinite amount of power. Release date: June 25
